Stéphane Dumas — EPITHELIA

Biography

After studying interior design, Stéphane Dumas dedicated himself to painting and drawing,  evolving towards a practice including volume and space.

After being awarded a Fulbright scholarship, he stays a long time in New York city,  where his drawings become pieces composed with volumes. In New York, Stephane Dumas married designer Sota Kol and welcomed the birth of their daughter. Exhibitions in various countries.

Back in Paris, Stéphane Dumas includes photography in his practice and works on the relation between the sacred and the profane: “The sense of the sacred does not rely on any religious topic […] but rather on the burn of the image” (Alexia Guggemos). Travels to Asia. Exhibitions in Europe. His work is included in various collections in Europe and the USA.

Since 1997, his work consists in skins scattered with marks and hanged in space. Light becomes a major element of his practice. Simultaneously, he designs several exhibitions and sets for the theater and teaches in that field at ESAA Duperré, Paris.

Since the completion of a PhD in Arts at Sorbonne university, Stéphane Dumas spends more and more time writing and researching in esthetics. He is part of a research laboratory at Sorbonne university.

His main focus is on the embodiment of image and meaning in art. He studies the physiological processes occurring through the skin in order to develop a secretory model of artistic creation. He participates in seminars and contributes to diverse publications. Stephane Dumas’ book entitled Creative Skins was published in 2014 by Klinksieck press.
